James Sulzer, PhD. is Associate Professor/Staff Scientist in the Department of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation at Case Western Reserve University and MetroHealth Medical Center. He completed his PhD at the former Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago, designing and testing a lower limb exoskeleton for people with post-stroke Stiff-Knee gait. He then completed his postdoc at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, Zurich, focusing on fMRI neurofeedback. After joining the faculty at the University of Texas at Austin in Mechanical Engineering, his daughter sustained a severe traumatic brain injury, where he wrote an influential article on his family’s experience. He subsequently moved to Cleeland to join the faculty in PM&R at Case/MetroHealth and has since focused on improving the connections between researchers and the disability community. He is on the Research Council of United Cerebral Palsy, the Board of Directors of RePlay for Kids, an adaptive toy organization, and an editor for the American Journal of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation.
