Alexios Carayannopoulous, DO, MPH, DABPMR, FFSMB, FASOMR (he/him/his)

Alexios G. Carayannopoulos, DO, MPH, DABPMR, FASOMR, FFSMB is the System Chief of PM&R and Rehabilitation Services at Brown University Health and Brown Health Medical Group. He is a full professor of neurosurgery and neurology, clinician educator, at The Warren Alpert Medical School of Brown University. Dr. Carayannopoulos is board-certified in both PM&R as well as in Pain Medicine. He completed his residency in PM&R at Harvard Medical School and fellowship in Pain Medicine at Dartmouth Medical School. He earned a master’s degree in public health from Johns Hopkins University and certification in medical acupuncture from Harvard University. He spent 13 years as a US Navy diver and submarine officer and is a specialist in undersea medicine and radiation health.

Dr. Carayannopoulos is internationally known as a leader in rehabilitation, interventional spine treatment, and pain medicine. He is president of the American Society of Osteopathic Medical Regulators and president of the Rhode Island Society of Pain Physicians. He is chair of multiple committees within the American Society of Regional Anesthesia and Pain Medicine, American Academy of Physical Medicine and Rehabilitation, North American Neuromodulation Society, and the International Neuromodulation Society. He is a board member of the American Society of Pain and Neuroscience.

Dr Carayannopoulos has been awarded Top Doctor in physical medicine and rehabilitation each year from 2017 through 2025 by Castle Connolly. He is a Director on the Federation of State Medical Boards and also sits on the Rhode Island Board of Medical Licensure and Discipline and the Rhode Island Board of Occupational Therapy. He is extensively published in the medical literature, frequently speaks at national and international medical meetings, and has been interviewed by the news media on numerous occasions.
